A grant of $2012 was approved by the Board of Directors of Captain Planet Foundation in December 2015 in favor of the GERAS’ project on climate change workshop for young people.
The Captain Planet Foundation was launched as a result of a cartoon that aired in the ’90s [on TBS] called Captain Planet and the Planeteers. It featured the first and only eco-superhero. It really taught kids about issues of global importance – both environmental and social. The cartoon was seen in 100 countries in 23 different languages. Five youths that were main characters were from five continents. These youths would work together to solve real world problems, and when it was too big for them to accomplish, they would call on Captain Planet. “Our small grants are between $200 and $2,500. It really gives educators the critical gap funding they need to teach children outside of the classroom and do environmental stewardship projects”, said Laura Turner Seydel, Chairperson of the Captain Planet Foundation during an interview on Georgia Trend Magazine.
The Captain Planet Foundation primarily makes grants to U.S.-based schools and organizations with an annual operating budget of less than $3 million. International requests are also accepted, with preference given to international projects which have U.S.-based partners. Grants are made for activities that conform to the mission of the Captain Planet Foundation which is: To give the next generation of environmental stewards an active understanding and love for the natural world in which they live. The foundation’s unique program of funding and supporting hands-on environmental projects is designed to encourage innovative initiatives that inspire and empower children and youth around the world as they work individually and collectively creating environmental solutions in their homes, schools and communities.
“We are so impressed with the project brought to us by Geo-Environmental Resource Association (GERAS),” says Leesa Carter, Executive Director of the Foundation. “We are honored to play a part in funding its implementation and wish GERAS great success on this important project. It is our hope that our combined efforts to educate, empower, involve and invest in today’s youth will cultivate a better tomorrow for everyone.”
“It is a great opportunity for me and my team to expand the project from its pilot phase; and I am very grateful for the trust and support from Captain Planet Foundation and my Planeteer vision is to establish, support and monitor Environmental Clubs in our beneficiary schools so that they strictly follow-up their School Environmental Management Plans. As such, these young people will help reduce their respective schools carbon footprint” says Ndzishepngong Kelvin Ngwang, the CEO of GERAS Cameroon.
With this grant, GERAS intends to reach out to at least 10 schools in Kumba, South West region of Cameroon. At least 100 school children will benefit from this grant, and at least 100 trees will be planted, with more multiplier effects. The outreach of the project will increase with respect to time and resources.
